Ammolite is a fascinating and rare organic gemstone. It originates from the fossilized shells of ammonites, ancient marine creatures with spiral shells.

These shells are primarily made of aragonite, the same mineral found in pearls and coral. Ammolite is mostly discovered in the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada. Similar iridescent shell fragments from other places are known as Lumachelle.
 
Highlighting its rarity and prestige, ammolite was named the official gemstone of Alberta in 2022!
